Hi all. I'm thinking about having a spare car around to limit some of the miles I've been putting on my CTS-V Wagon. I have been fond of the panther platform ever since I ended up with some crown vics as rentals a few years back.

Now I'm looking at Grand Marquis' and it seems that there are plenty of super clean early 4th gens with under 150k miles and going for $3500 and less. I'm leaning towards a GS because having leather interior in Phoenix sucks and I'm not a fan of airbags either. I have a few questions before I jump into one. They are:

What exactly does the HPP give you suspension wise? I see you get a lower gear ratio, dual exhaust, 17" rims, maybe a different torque converter?..but are the springs and shocks different? What about swaybars? I guess the rear springs are airbags too?

Any specific things I need to look for when looking at a car? Specific suspension pieces that are known to wear..engine or other issues? I think '03's have bad rear ends if they are pre 1/03.

Is there an issue that I need to look for timing chain tensioner wise on the '03's? I think there was a TSB.

I like the '06 and up gauge cluster better than the '03-'05. Can I swap the later one from a junkyard in if I get ? Yes, I know I need to deal with the odometer.

Are junkyard parts for suspension upgrades plentiful? I'm thinking bigger swaybars, or a 3:27 rear diff.

Anything else that would steer me towards one year vs. another?

What ever happened with the whole exploding gas tank issue?

    I'm not new to forums but I am new to a Crown Vic. I hadn't really planned on buying one but I've promised my son if he graduates high school on time he gets my 2007 Jeep Wrangler. His report car at the end of this school year was less than stellar so since the Jeep is carrot we needed a ride to serve as the stick. Enter a 1998 Crown Vic. We initially went to look at a Rally Edition Mitsubishi Lancer but it was trashed. The Ford on the other hand is rust free, super clean inside and out, everything works as it should and it drives great. It has 148k miles and is even running a fairly new set of Goodyear tires. I picked it up for $2300 and really I won't be too upset if it becomes my ride in a year. It really is a nice car.
Oh yeah, the other rides are an 05 Trailblazer, a 1988 Suburban, the Jeep and my pride and joy, a 1977 Corvette. Really not a Ford guy but the condition and price convinced me the Crown Vic was the right choice.

Hello Fellow Panther Owners,

I've owned my Marauder for a little over a year and I love it! But modifying this car is addictive; it should have come with a warning label LOL.

First I did CAI, Performance tune and 4.10 gears, then I upgraded the suspension with bigger sway bars, rear control arms & watts link, upgraded the brakes with C-5 calipers & GT500 rotors, stainless steel brake lines and cut 1 coil the coils springs. Recently deleted the rear cats for a little more exhaust sound. The car runs great! I'm planning to add headers and ultimately boost! Hopefully, I'll be done then! Shout out to Marty O and the crew at Mo's Speed Shop who did most of the work on my car you guys rock!

Looking forward to learning from you guys and gals and making some new friends in the process! -

I have two Panthers....A 2007 P71 with 116,xxx on the clock and a 1998 Grand Marquis with 78,xxx. The P71 is all stock. The Merc has Comp Cams and springs, upgraded exhaust, cold air, B&M shift kit and SCT programming. I think that the P71 pulls harder but the Merc may beat it in top end. I will put them head to head at some point.
