Important FAQ
Q: What are some important Model/Year changes and facts?
A:
2011 - Last year of production for US sales.
Gigantic headrests due to new federal regulations.

2006 - First year with new instrument cluster which has issues with non replaceable lights going out.
First year with standard 17" wheels
Revised DBW (drive by wire) tune

2005 - First year of DBW (drive by wire) which had not been fully worked out, some complain of most lag in 2005. Redesigned steering wheel and column. PCM relocated underhood (On top of left wheel well apron)
Switch to 31 spline axles on December 6, 2004 and continued through the end of production 2011... (pre December 4, 2004 are 28 spline axles)
2005 - is the only year with radio antenna on the rear quarter panel. The Antenna base is very hard to find so don't break it.

2003 - New frame and suspension front and rear.
New rack and pinion up front with coil over shocks
Rear shocks moved to outside of frame.
Wider rear axle housing and "high" offset or FWD offset wheels.
New front swaybar to go with new front suspension.
New body redesign for the Grand Marquis and Town Car.
Interior redesign for all with new door handles and headrests
New defrost duct that allows double DIN radio install.
New window and lock buttons.

2001 - PI heads on all models.
Defrost button next to heater controls(was previously on drivers left)

1998 - First year of the "Whale" body style.
First year of watts link and parallel rear control arms.
First year of "big brakes" with ~12.5" front and 11" rear rotors.
Q: What problems were there for my year/model?
A:
2006 - Non-replaceable lights going out in instrument cluster (continued through 2007 or 2008)

2005 - DBW (drive by wire) Some people have experience lag in throttle response.

2003+ - Relocated the AC Accumulator/Dryer was relocated lower and sits in a plastic sleeve. It's susceptible to rust due to it's new location and splashing of water and road salts as well as the plastic sleeve holding moisture from condensation. It's recommended that the accumulator /dryer is changes when installing a new ac compressor.

2003 - Soft axle problem
There was a recall for fleet vehicles:
Certain 2003 model year Ford Crown Victoria Police/Commercial (Body codes P70, P71 and P72) vehicles built at the St. Thomas Assembly Plant from October 10, 2001 through December 4, 2002.
Certain 2003 model year Lincoln Town Car vehicles sold to fleets (Body codes M84 and M81 ordered with FIN code) built at the Wixom Assembly Plant from November 14, 2001 through December 3, 2002.
A TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for 2003 civilian models was:
Some 2003 Town Car (except Limo and Hearse chassis), Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis vehicles produced before 1/1/2003, may exhibit rear axle shaft and/or axle bearing premature wear. This is caused by excessive load, temperature, and inadequate lubrication.

Q: 2000-2003 -GRINDING TYPE NOISE COMING FROM TIMING CHAIN COVER AREA

Problem: SOME 4.6L ENGINES MAY EXHIBIT A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM TIMING COVER AREA. THIS MAY BE CAUSE BY EXCESSIVE WEAR OF THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER ARMS. THE TENSIONER ARM HAS AN ALUMINUM BASE WITH A NYLON SURFACE. ANOTHER INDICATION OF THIS CONDITION MAY BE THE PRESENCE OF FINE NYLON AND OR ALUMINUM PARTICLES IN THE ENGINE OIL.
Action: INSPECT TIMING CHAINS AND TENSIONERS FOR EXCESSIVE WEAR, IF CONDITION EXISTS, REPLACE TIMING CHAINS, TENSIONERS AND TENSIONER ARMS.
Q: 2001-2004 -ENGINE TICKING NOISE AT IDLE

Issue: The engine mounts on some vehicles may not
exhibit satisfactory durability under severe operating
conditions that may be encountered by Police, Taxi
or Limo/Livery vehicles such as extended idling at
high ambient temperatures. This may be caused by
the extreme heat generated by the engine under
these conditions.
Action: IF engine mounts are found to be degraded, install new revised engine mounts which incorporate a heat shield. For left side engine mount, use 1W7Z-6038-BA - right side engine mount, use 1W7Z-6038-AA.
